Embark on your journey with an introduction of our work and the conservation towards the hoiho/ Yellow-eyed penguins, before a short bus ride to reach our ngāhere/ forest track where our ranger will share knowledge of New Zealand flora and fauna as you are immersed in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature as you are lead through our bush reserve.

Finish at the end of our bush trail into our reserve which provides a unique opportunity to experience viewing coastal and marine wildlife species including the hoiho and kororā (little penguins), fur seals, sea lions, and several other species that call this place home!

Finally, a short bus ride back to where you started to visit our Penguin Rehabilitation Centre (if birds are in our care), where you can see these rare birds up close.

Itinerary

  • Begin your experience in a theatre setting, where you will hear our story to preserve our reserve while learning about one of the rarest penguins in the world the "Hoiho/ Yellow-eyed penguin" and our efforts to protect them
  • See our restoration projects focusing on returning to what was, conversely, the restoration focus at The OPERA is to move forward in concert with nature
  • Then take a short bus trip into our reserve, to embark on a guided walk of approximately 3km (1.9 mile)
  • Continue with a bush walk through a lush mature and restored forest as you take in the sounds of the trail-side stream and the forest teeming with birdlife.
  • Finish with a stroll through our reserve on a nature walk with the potential to see numerous plants and animals, including yellow-eyed penguins and little penguins, fur seals, sea lions, and several species of shore and land birds, all of which reside in the reserve.
  • You may also visit our Penguin Rehabilitation Centre, where you can see hoiho and other penguins up close (when penguins are in our care).

The tour may be cancelled in the unlikely event of extreme weather events. Guest must be able to walk up to 3km (1.9mi) through our reserve which covers over 300 steps and uneven terrain. If you have any medical conditions that could impact you joining the tour, to please inform reception staff when checking in..
