Unforgettable, raw, and breathtaking.
Waimangu is one of those rare places that leaves you completely awestruck not just by its natural beauty, but by its sense of mystery and ancient power. Walking through this geothermal valley feels like stepping into another world, where the earth is very much alive beneath your feet. From steaming crater lakes to bubbling springs, lush native bush, and panoramic views that stop you in your tracks every turn on the trail is a surprise. The highlight for me was Frying Pan Lake, the world’s largest hot spring, it’s surreal to see steam rising off a lake surrounded by birdsong and greenery. The walking tracks are really well laid out, and you can choose the level of walk that suits your energy. There’s also a shuttle if you want to skip the uphill climb at the end. The staff were so friendly and informative you can feel how much they care about this incredible ecosystem. If you’re in Rotorua or nearby, this is an absolute must-do. It’s peaceful, powerful, and humbling, a living reminder of how dynamic and sacred the land really is.

Awesome landscape
Great walk down the volcanic valley. Lots to see including all the colours created by the deposits. Return bus ran exactly on time. Friendly staff.

Fabulous walk
Easy walk take your time reading all the signs with snippets of history. Fascinating crater lakes and waterways. So interesting. Great to have the shuttle bus back very well organised. The staff were friendly and helpful on reception and the cafe. Highly recommend.
