cool caves

Great experience, felt very safe throughout. Awesome guides, knowledgeable about the caves, glowworms, and the eel. Wasn't physically exerting apart from the ladder near the end. Plenty of breaks for photos, observing, and learning about the cave. They take great photos too! I went in the morning where there were glorious light rays shining into the misty cave, would recommend.

Absolutely amazing!!!

This was an experience of a lifetime. Our guide Amy, was knowledgeable and friendly. All of the gear was provided, which was definitely a bonus because it was a messy activity. Descending 100 m was an experience I will never forget. Be aware that the terrain is extremely uneven and this tour definitely requires a level of fitness and balance. The ladder climb at the end to get out had over a hundred rungs! We were the only people in the cave and the only people on the tour, so it was extremely tranquil and uncrowded. Each guide takes four people at a time. We definitely saw glow worms, and they were magical. I could not recommend this experience more.

Hi Natalie! Thanks so much for your wonderful review :) Yep - these are truly wild places and still in their natural state - hence the uneven nature of the going. ...and the ladder does indeed have 113 rungs - most people haven't climbed something like that lately ! You will have seen that these boutique and special trips are not suitable for everyone. But you took on the challenge and did it - well done. Thanks for visiting - we're so glad you could check out our special corner of Godzone :)

An Adventure I Will Never Forget

I made a last-minute decision to book the four-hour Lost World Tour, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. The crew were incredible from the very beginning; funny, welcoming, extremely thorough in their briefings, and supportive throughout the entire adventure. They made everyone feel safe, capable and excited, even when we were stepping well outside our comfort zones. Only my overseas-adventure self would attempt something like this, and it is an experience I will never forget. The scenery is spectacular, the experience is completely unique, and the sense of achievement afterwards is unbeatable. Do not overthink it, book the tour! You will be nervous, exhilarated and incredibly proud that you did it. I am already planning to return in April 2027 for the full-day adventure and am more than willing to fly across the Tasman to experience it all again!

Hey Kathryn You are a real star! Lost World Cave is a truly formidable place. It's not just NZs highest abseil, but descends into the massive and spectacular (tomo) sinkhole we've grown to know and love. This is definitely not for everyone but if you have a desire for a real adventure and pushing to the edge of your comfort zone then this is the one. ...and YOU did it - congratulations! Yes - please come back and do the all -day option. As amazing as the abseil is you can be sure that the underground streamway is even more so. We guarantee safety - you just need to be keen and fit ! This is the biggest caving adventure in NZ.

Better quality images.

Picture quality is very poor. Great guides though.

Hi Carlos Our practice is to provide photos to our much valued customers free of charge. Wild caves are notoriously difficult to get good photos in, so we tend to take more than one shot of the same thing. What's then meant to happen is that we delete the dud ones and send you the good ones. The problem here was simply that the dud photos weren't deleted before the file was sent to you. All the good photos are still there however and some of them seem pretty good to us. We apologise for any confusion and for not editing the dud photos out. Regards Waitomo Adventures
