The Paparoa Experience – Where Legends Live and Landscapes Speak
Discover the untold stories of Te Tai o Poutini through an unforgettable journey that fuses Māori culture, geological wonder, and cutting-edge technology. Created by the award-winning Gibson Group, this immersive adventure brings the heart of Paparoa National Park to life in ways you've never seen before.
Step into the world of Ngāti Waewae and trace the sacred origins of pounamu (greenstone), as legendary tales like Tamaahua and his tekateka unfold before your eyes. Wander through vivid storytelling zones where local voices, landscapes, and lore are woven together, inviting you to interact with the plants, animals, and spirit of Paparoa and Punakaiki.
Plunge into an ancient underworld of limestone caves, meet the fascinating creatures that dwell within, and feel the raw energy of the iconic Pancake Rocks blowhole. Whether you’re young or simply young at heart, this interactive, family-friendly experience connects you deeply to the whenua, the past, and the natural beauty that defines this mountainous coastal paradise.
Paparoa – A Hidden World Awaits.
I would thoroughly recommend this interactive exhibition which looks at how the pancake rocks were formed, the fauna and flora, the cave system and the residents who are working hard to look after different aspects of the area such as kiwis, petrol, and crafts. There are many interactive elements which mean that you are drawn into the information, it isn’t easy to describe but after passing through the different rooms you feel afterwards that you have a much better understanding of the area and the people who live there.
Interesting walk through, very well done and the kids loved the interactive elements - glad we used book me as I felt even the discount price was a lot for what you get
Informative and interactive. Great for adults and children. Great asset for the coast and Paparoa.
Comprising a mix of video, interactive exhibits, listening booths, information panels and beautifully presented on-screen displays this exhibition takes you through Māori legends of the West Coast, the flora and fauna of Paparoa, the waters of the area, the creation of the pancake stacks of rock along the coast and the karst limestone landscape inland and the sealife of the local marine reserve. Welcome hosts who explain the exhibition introduce you to your self-guided tour. I would leave at least an hour to enjoy all the details.
