Take a unique voyage of discovery and wonder at The Goldfields Mining Centre on a tour that could only be better described as pure gold!
You'll join a local guide and explore the 25 hectare site at the Goldfields Mining Centre, where you'll discover a Chinese village, many shafts and tunnels and learn about the way miners lived and worked in the area.
Get an insight into the Central Otago Goldrush history and see a demonstration of the California sluice gun fired up to reveal its awesome water pressure used to dislodge gold bearing ore. You'll also discover how the stamper battery was used to crush gold-bearing rock.
Top off the experience with a gold panning demonstration and the chance to try your luck at it!
A must do attraction for both Kiwis and international visitors alike, there's something for everyone at the Goldfields Mining Centre.

Fun activity for all ages
Thank you Chris, for a fun and informative afternoon and demonstration. The walk around the Chinese mining village was enjoyable and interesting. The best part for myself and partner was the gold panning demonstration class and help for all ages to aid in our new learned skill. Unfortunately we did not strike gold in them those hills lol. Though We can now take our new learned skills onwards and try gold panning out in the rivers and hope to find our fortune hahaha.

The talk the gentlemen gave was very informative, we related to a lot of information he provided in our trip to Queentown and Dunedin. The lady in the shop was lovely. The machinery that was used 150 years ago was so advanced, it’s incredible how the early goldminers invented such advanced machinery, a lot of the mechanisms I see in operation today.

Great experience
Some really interesting information shared around the history of panning for gold. Really intriguing to see old equipment. Added bonus of getting to pan for your own gold at the end is bliss. Finders keepers!
