Rail Cruising is a fun, innovative and totally new way for people to explore the stunning Dansey Scenic Reserve.
This is a magical railway experience with a difference. In this awesome travel experience you get to step aboard and captain your very own rail car! The Rail Cruiser is a self drive heated 4 seater hybrid rail car with unobstructed viewing windows.
The RailCruiser V3000 is an innovative world first vehicle like no other! Travel along the Rotorua Railway in your comfortable RailCruiser at 20km/hr departing Ngongotaha Railway Station. You can listen to the audio tour as you make your way through the beautiful Dansey Scenic Reserve and surrounding farmland on your 26 km return trip to Mamaku Railway Station.
The historic railway provides gentle curves and steep climbs with views of Lake Rotorua, stunning bush scenery and views extending as far as Mount Tarawera. Fun experience!
Well organised and great to spend time in the hills around Rotorua. Perhaps more could be made of the commentary (clearer locations and reminders on the way back as we missed photos of interest on way up). Shame time spent at top is limited, looking forward when more is made of this stop.

Unique experience
Fun experience despite the rain. Lovely, relaxed, welcome staff - thank you ☺️. Only suggestion is to invest more into the quality of speakers, so that we can hear the commentary better (car 9, anyway)

Definitely worth doing
I really appreciated the thought behind this experience. I love that they are restoring something that was neglected with good old Kiwi ingenuity :) Perhaps a revamp of the onboard commentary with more frequent information about the railway and perhaps the surrounding area might make the trip a bit more exciting.

Amazing and amusing
A lovely drive through the bush. Saw Betty the chicken. Just a nice easy ride through untouched bush. Would definitely recommend it.

Rail cruise
We had a wonderful time and Shelley the guide was great. I think it may be a good idea to add a tip top freezer or something for when you get to the mamaku cabin and maybe have cash sales or something there. Would make the summer trips even better
